Councilmember Alex Padilla Biography

Alex Padilla was first elected to the Los Angeles City Council in June 1999, becoming the third-youngest person ever elected to City office. He was re-elected to serve a full four-year term after running unopposed in the April 2001 elections, and was first elected to serve a two-year term as City Council President in July 2001. Padilla was unanimously re-elected as Council President on July 1, 2003.

Alex Padilla serves as Chair of the City Council's Rules & Elections Committee, as Vice-Chair of the Arts, Parks, Health & Aging Committee, and as a member of the Environmental Quality & Waste Management Committee. In addition, he serves as Vice-Chair of the Ad Hoc Stadium Committee, and served as Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Democratic National Convention. Alex Padilla was appointed by Gov. Gray Davis to the California Film Commission in April 2002.

Some of Alex Padilla's major accomplishments include: identifying a site and providing the resources necessary for a new branch of the Children’s Museum of Los Angeles at Hansen Dam in the San Fernando Valley; securing $9 million to fund the Valley Youth Initiative, a job-skills training program for Valley youth; developing a policy of open access for cable Internet service in the City of Los Angeles; creating a multi-million dollar program for infrastructure repair and economic development in the northeast Valley; and winning approval for a Major League Baseball Youth Academy for at-risk youth in Southern California.

Alex Padilla began his career in public service as an educational counselor at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. After completing a post-graduate program in public policy with the Coro Foundation, Alex Padilla worked in the office of United States Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California) where he helped secure federal programs and services for Southern California. He then served as District Director for 39th District Assemblyman Tony Cardenas (D-Sylmar). In 1997, Alex Padilla was appointed by Mayor Richard J. Riordan to the City of Los Angeles Building and Safety Commission, where he considered health and safety code violation appeals from residential and business property owners. Alex Padilla currently serves on the Board of Directors of the League of California Cities and is President of its Latino Caucus, and is also a board member of the National League of Cities.

Alex Padilla was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley and attended local public schools. A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) with a degree in mechanical engineering, Alex Padilla was chosen by M.I.T. to recruit students from the Southwest.

Alex Padilla lives in Pacoima where he attends Mary Immaculate Church.

The 7th Council District serves the communities of Arleta, Lake View Terrace, Mission Hills,
North Hills, Pacoima, Panorama City, and Sylmar.
