DOMESTIC VIOLENCEDomestic Violence is defined as actual acts of violence committed or threats of violence by family members, a person you live with, or have lived with, your husband or wife, your boyfriend or girlfriend, your ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend, ex-husband or ex-wife, the father or mother of your child, your child, your parents or your brother or sister. Over the past several years the Los Angeles City Council has made significant strides to address the issue of domestic violence in the City. Notable efforts have been made to improve coordination between the City s Police Department and City Attorney and other agencies who respond to the problem of domestic violence in our city. Further, the City has dedicated a significant amount of money for increasing the size of the City Attorney s Domestic Violence Prosecuting Division, purchasing cameras and other necessary equipment to assist the police and City Attorney with gathering evidence in these cases and has set aside annually $5million to provide funding for domestic violence agencies who offer a variety of assistance to domestic violence victims and their families. This assistance offered by the City s Domestic Violence Shelters to victims and their children ranges from emergency and transitional shelter services, counseling, job placement, support during court proceedings, schooling for children, providing clothing and other household supplies, coordination with other services such as transportation and placement in long term housing. Victims of Domestic Violence in the City of Los Angeles can call a 24 hour toll-free hotline which will connect them directly with an emergency domestic violence shelter in their area. That number is 1-800-978-3600. Additionally, there is a national 24 hour hotline that can be called from anywhere in the country where referrals and assistance is also available. That number is 1- 800-799-7233. You can also visit the Los Angeles City Attorney's Domestic Violence Unit.
